What are Herrings?
Herrings are pelagic, round fish caught via purse seine fishing and available with MSC certification making them a sustainable fish choice.
Herrings are usually most readily available in the winter months. A yield of approximately 50% can be achieved from a herring. If Herring is unavailable, Mackerel offer a good alternative as an oily fish.
Clupea harengus (North Atlantic) or Clupea pallasii (Pacific).
Herrings are usually most readily available from November to January.
Mackerel can be a good alternative to Herrings.
