How to Prepare Crab
To prepare crab for cooking, start by rinsing it under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. If working with live crab, ensure it is humanely dispatched by placing it in the freezer for about 30 minutes before cooking.
For whole crabs, remove the apron (the triangular section under the shell), and carefully detach the carapace to clean out the gills, lungs, and digestive material. Rinse thoroughly again, ensuring all unwanted parts are removed.
For crab legs or pre-cooked meat, simply thaw if frozen and inspect for any shell fragments before proceeding.
How to Cook Crab
Crab can be cooked using several methods, each bringing out its natural flavours. Boiling is a classic method—immerse the crab in salted boiling water for 10–15 minutes, depending on its size.
Steaming retains more flavour, requiring a steaming basket and grilling adds a smoky depth; brush the crab with seasoned butter.
Baking is another option, ideal for stuffed or seasoned crabs. Always ensure the crab is fully cooked, with bright orange shells and opaque meat.
